EUNICE- Funeral services for Lester Joseph Manuel, 87, will be Monday, April 28, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Ardoins Funeral Home Chapel in Eunice. Burial will follow in the St. Paul Mausoleum with Fr. Tom Voorhies officiating.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rena Lavergne Manuel; three daughters, Katherine Landreneau and husband, Patrick, Erma Jean Manuel, Genevieve Genny Fontenot and husband, Mark; one nephew, James Manuel; one sister-in-law, Anna Belle Manuel; Bruce Soileau who was raised as a son, and wife, Tracy; eight grandchildren, Joni Kevin Landreneau, Joshua Fontenot Bobbie Jo Callender, Pam Simon, Vince, Simon, and Kennedy Manuel.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Lula Savoy Manuel Courville and father Icx Manuel; one brother, Dr. BJ Manuel; one sister, Genevieve Manuel; two stepsons, Kenneth Allen Manuel; and four grandchildren.

Lester was widely known of as the blind farmer on Highway 13. He bought a small farm in 1943 three miles north of Eunice. After his marriage to Rena on February 2, 1949, they worked the land together, along with their children, accumulating more property as time passed. During these years, he quickly lost his sight but continued to work on his farm, doing anything and everything a sighted person could do and more. He was a member of the Affiliated Blind of Louisiana, Eunice Chapter and a Director on the Board of Tri-Parish Rice Drier for many years. He has and continues to be a model of determination and strength to all who have known him. He will be greatly missed.

The family request visitation hours be observed on Sunday, April 27, 2008 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again on Monday, April 28, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. until services. A Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening.
