EUNICE-The family of Judge J. Nilas Young announces his death with great sadness. Judge Young was a life long resident of the Eunice area. Judge Young served as a community leader and civil pioneer in Eunice for more than sixty years. After leaving his rural home in Tepitate, Acadia Parish, he attended S.L.I now the University of Lafayette at Louisiana where he received a bachelor of Arts degree. He then enlisted in the army where he reached the rank of Lieutenant. He was a Word World 11 Veteran having served in Korea. He obtained a Juris Doctorate degree at L. S. U. Law School after returning from the war. He established a law practice in Eunice being one of the first attorneys to establish a practice there. In 1956 he was elected as the first City Judge for the city of Eunice where he served honorably for twenty-eight years. He received many distinguished appointments during his judicial career, among them President of the Louisiana City Judge Association, Judge Advocate for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chairman of the committee on Jurisdiction for the North American Judge Association. He was a member of the St. Landry, Louisiana, and American Bar Associations.
Judge Young was a civil leader in the community. He served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, St. Edmund Booster Club, and local VFW chapter. As one of Eunices original Rotarians he was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also selected as Eunices Citizen of the year.
Judge Young was also a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church where he served on the parish council, as a Eucharistic minister, and lector. He served with the Knights of Columbus and was selected by Pope John Paul 11 as a Knight of St. Gregory.
Judge Young was preceded in by his parents, Benjamin Young and Mary Reed Young; son-in-law Blake Feucht.
Survivors include Lillie C. Young his wife of sixty-three years, a son, Dr. J. Nilas Young, Jr., and wife, Dr. Christina Young of Davis, California; two daughters, Judge Lynette Feucht and husband, Charles of Eunice, Lucinda Young Feucht, also of Eunice; eight grandchildren, Spencer, Lindsey, Benjamin and Peter Young of California, Stan, Laura, Leslie Katherine, and William Feucht of Eunice.
He was dearly loved an respected and will be greatly missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am Friday, February 09, 2007 at St. Anthony Catholic Church for Judge J. Nilas Young, 84, who passed on Tuesday, February 06, 2007.
The Rev. Tom Voorhies, Msgr Harry Benefel and Father Jules Speyrer will be the Celebrants with the Rite of Committal to follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Eunice.
The family request that visitation hours be observed on Thursday, February 08, 2007 at Ardoins Funeral Home from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm and again on Friday, February 09, 2007 from 8:00 am until time of services with a Rosary to be recited at 7:30 Thursday evening.
