EUNICE-It is with great sadness that the family of Gil B. Young, 81, announces his passing on Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Acadia-St. Landry Hospital in Church Point. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 10:00 am at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice. Rite of Committal will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery with Father Tom Voorhies Celebrant.
As a veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Gil served his country proudly and participated in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Shortly after his tour of duty he began working at Ardoins Funeral Homes of which he was soon named the General Manager. For many years Mr. Gil directed and guided the business side of the funeral home as well as the many grieving families that he personally helped while dealing with the death of a loved one. He later assumed the role of Funeral Home President, a position he maintained until his death.
During his long and successful career, Mr. Gil held numerous positions with many organizations that made him very well known and loved in Eunice and surrounding communities such as being a longtime member of the Eunice Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Volunteer Fire Chief and was President of the Eunice Firemans Association for 15 years. During this time, Mr. Gil was instrumental in acquiring new equipment for the growing fire department. For over 30 years, Mr. Gil taught Hunter Safety classes to many young boys and girls, and he was recognized by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries for his achievements. In 1980 he was named Citizen of the Year by the Eunice Rotary Club. He was a member of the Eunice Chamber of Commerce, where he was named Member of the Year in 1985 and held the position of President in 1988. He also served on the Eunice City Council where he was Councilman for Ward 4 from 1991 to 1996, when he became Mayor for the City of Eunice. Mr. Gil was also a Board Member at Moosa Memorial Hospital and the Port of Commission in Krotz Springs, La, as well as a long time member of the Louisiana Funeral Directors Association, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also instrumental in establishing the Wilson J. Moosa Memorial Scholarship at Louisiana State University at Eunice. For many years, he served as a member of the St. Landry Parish Sheriffs Posse and was a long time participant of the Eunice Mardi Gras Association where he served as Treasurer for a number of years. Mr. Gil was one of the founders of the Cajun French Music Hall of Fame and was a member of the Cajun French Music Association. He was a long time participant and winner of the Annual Crawfish Etouffee Cook-Off and was recognized in the October 1990 National Geographic article, The Cajuns: Still Loving Life.
Mr. Gil was known by many as an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved cooking, Cajun French Music, sketching pictures and traveling with his family.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mr. Gil will be remembered by his wife of 58 years, Ruby S. Young of Eunice; his two sons, Wendell B. Young and wife, Margaret of Eunice, and Dwayne K. Young of Baton Rouge; his daughter, Saundra Y. Frey and husband, Pat of Eunice; his sister, Grace Fontenot of Lansing, Kansas; 6 grandchildren, Linzay, Jennifer, and Meghann Young, Patrick and Mia Frey, and Jason Young. Words cannot describe how much he loved his grandchildren and how dearly he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Linzay and Armenie McGee Young; Brother, Herbert Young.
The family request that visiting hours be observed on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Ardoins Funeral Home in Eunice from 1:00 pm until 9:00 pm and again on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 from 7:00 am until time of services. A Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm Tuesday evening.
