EUNICE-A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 10 am Friday, January 19, 2007 at St. Anthonys Catholic Church in Eunice, for Coach R. Eldon Chachere, 86, who passed away at 8:30 am Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at Acadian Medical Center in Eunice.

The Rev. Tom Voorhies, Pastor of St. Anthonys Catholic Church in Eunice will be the Celebrant with Rite of Committal to follow in the St. Paul Cemetery in Eunice.

Mr. Chachere was born in Eunice on January 23, 1920, and was a life long resident of the Prudhomme Community. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Chachere was a 1939 graduate of Eunice High School and a 1948 graduate of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches where he was a three year starter playing both offensive and defensive guard. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and was stationed in Tarpon Springs, Florida for 3 years during, World War II. He was a member of the St. Thomas Chapel in Savoy and St. Anthony of Pauda Catholic Church. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 129 in Eunice.

Mr. Chachere or Coach as he was known to many was a retired teacher, coach and athletic director for St. Landry Parish Public School System working at Eunice Jr. High for 36 years. Following retirement, he joined the staff at Amy Bradford Ware High School in Opelousas serving as the Head football Coach and athletic coach for an additional three years. Mr. Chachere was active with the City of Eunice Summer Recreation Program where he coached, umpired and fundraised for the youth. He was also involved with the American Legion Boys Baseball Program. Through his years in the classroom and hours in the field, he influenced and shaped many young men and women.

In his spare time, Mr. Chachere raised and breed paint horses and was a Charter member of the Louisiana Paint Horse Association where he served as a former Vice President. Mr. Chachere had a love of outdoors and actively maintained his farm up until his death.

Survivors include his lovely wife, Madelon Michael Chachere of Eunice; three sons, Danny M. Chachere of Mandeville, Robert E. Chachere and wife, Donna of Eunice, T.C. Chachere and wife, Arlene of Eunice; one daughter, Tina Chachere McKissick and husband, Rod of Opelousas; eleven grandchildren, Michael, Christy, Brittany, Derek, Ashley, Tyler, Alyson, Wesley, William Chachere, Kathryn and Kurt McKissick.

Preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Barbara Chachere; two brothers, Lloyd Elmo and Gary Chachere; a sister, Valera C. Hundley.

The family request that visitation hours by observed from 11 am until 10 pm Thursday, January 18, 2007, at Ardoins Funeral Home in Eunice and again on Friday, January 19, 2007 at 8 am until time of services. A Rosary will be recited at 7 pm Thursday evening.
