EUNICE-A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 1:30 pm Thursday, March 15, 2007 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice, for Bernard C. Dr. Benny Fruge, Sr.,78, who passed away at 3:00 am on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette.
The Fr .Tom Voorhies, Pastor of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice will be the Celebrant and Concelebrant Fr. Henry Mancuso with the Rite of Committal to follow in the St. Paul Cemetery in Eunice.
Dr. Fruge was a longtime member of St. Anthony Catholic Church where he volunteered as Eucharistic Minister and C.C.D. teacher for many years as well as participated on the St. Anthony Catholic Church Parish Council.
Dr. Fruge is a graduate of St. Edmunds Catholic High School in 1945 and is named the first recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Association. In 1949 He received his undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University as well as his medical school degree in 1952. Dr. Fruge went on to serve as a Pediatric Resident at the Charity Hospital in New Orleans where he later became the Chief Resident. Dr. Fruge then served in the United States Air Force as a Flight Surgeon and is a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he commanded a M.A.S.H. Hospital. He was also named as the Flight Surgeon for Chitose Air Base in Hokkido, Japan. Following his military contribution, Dr. Fruge worked as Chief of Staff at Moosa Memorial Hospital in Eunice, LA until his retirement in 1995.
Dr. Fruge not only supported his patients in the medical field, he was truly a supportive figure to his community as well. He was a Scout Master, B.S.A. for Troop 8 where he received the Silver Beaver Award, B.S.A. In 1975 Dr. Fruge received the Citizen of the Year Award from the Eunice Rotary Club and the Humanitarian Award from the Eunice Lions Club in 1979. Dr. Fruge also participated in the St. Edmunds Catholic School Board and Booster Club.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Rozas Fruge of Eunice; five sons, Dr. Bernard C. Fruge, Jr. and wife, Cindy of Lafayette, Andre Fruge of Lafayette, John Fruge and wife, Paula of Eunice, Joel Fruge and wife, Cheryl of Lafayette, Patrick Fruge and wife, Michelle of Eunice; one daughter, Kelly Scofield and husband, Bryan of Lafayette; one brother, Jimmy Fruge of Eunice; twelve grandchildren.
The family request that visitation hours be observed from 2:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at Ardoins Funeral Home in Eunice and on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at 1:00 pm at St. Anthony Catholic Church until time of services. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm Wednesday evening.
